The All-on-4 dental procedure uses a hybrid of dentures and implants to replace missing teeth. An implant (usually titanium) screw is inserted into the jaw in a place where a tooth once was. When the implant is in place, your dentist will attach a false tooth to the screw. A total of four implants are placed on the top and bottom jaw at the main points of the mouth. They serve as anchors to attach dentures, eliminating the need for all implants, which can be extremely extensive. The dentures themselves can be made of different materials such as acrylic or porcelain.
This treatment has a shorter recovery time and are fixed in place. Unlike traditional dentures, you do not have to worry about the prosthetics falling out. This is also a good option for patients with jawbone loss which can be problematic for denture wearers. The procedure is not a fully customized solution, though, and the failure of just one implant can cause problems in the entire jaw. Some patients have also reported the artificial bridge as feeling bulky in their mouths.
The Ideal Candidate
While All-on-4s might seem like an ideal solution, no everyone is an ideal candidate for this procedure. A person needs to have a good deal of jawbone in place to hold the implants. If there is little bone this is not a feasible option. The implants cannot be placed in the molar area as this is the region with the most bite force. So, where your teeth are missing is another factor to consider. The good news is that age is not a factor when it comes to this procedure, but the candidate does need to be in good health. If you are missing most or all your teeth and/or wearing dentures, contact us today to find out if the All-on-4 procedure is a good option for you.
