![]() These illnesses can manifest themselves as both dental disease and body disease, so it is important to talk to both our office and your general care doctor. The leading cause of tooth loss in adults is periodontitis. Periodontitis is an advanced form of gingivitis, which occurs from poor dental hygiene and the accumulation of bacteria on the teeth and gums. In advanced forms of periodontitis, teeth can be lost due to the bacteria eating away at the gums and weakening the teeth causing them to be lost periodically. Cavities form when teeth are permanently damaged due to exposure to bacteria. When cavities form, they create a small hole in the tooth and become larger over time. If left untreated, a tooth suffering from a cavity will need to be removed because of damage. Prevention of Tooth LostFood can play a large role in the prevention of losing teeth. It is advisable to stay away from sugary foods and drinks. Bacteria in the mouth like to eat sugar, and with excess sugar, there will be more potential for bacterial growth. If you are treating yourself to a something like ice cream, it is a good idea to brush your teeth afterwards to inhibit the growth of bacteria. From a dental perspective, most tooth loss can be avoided through good oral hygiene. We recommend that you always floss and brush your teeth at least two times a day. We also recommend that you schedule visits to our office once every six months for a teeth cleaning, so that we can not only assess your dental health but also provide care to prevent gum disease and cavities. If you have any more question, please feel free to call our office. We would love to discuss the best prevention methods for losing teeth. |
