Most Large Fillings Need a Crown to Cover the Tooth

Posted on 2/10/2020 by Dr. Shiotsu
Most Large Fillings Need a Crown to Cover the ToothWhen you have a small cavity filled, it often doesn't need to have a crown placed on top. The filling material itself is enough to complete fill in the cavity and repair the tooth.

However, with large fillings, this isn't always the case. These large fillings may need to have a crown to cover the top of the tooth. To understand why, you need to know when it's necessary to have a crown.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A crown is the cap that is placed over the entire top part of the tooth. These crowns are custom made for each tooth so that they perfectly fit. They help prevent bacteria from getting into the tooth and damaging it further, plus they provide additional support for the tooth. With teeth that have large cavities, there's often many ways for bacteria to go from that tooth into the gums. A crown adds an additional layer of protection to the tooth, blocking bacteria from getting into the filling.

Do You Need One?

In many cases, a crown isn't necessary. However, if the cavity is fairly large, it's definitely recommended due to the extent of the damage. If you have to have a root canal, you'll have to have a crown because the tooth will be too damaged to function normally. The crown will provide structural support to the tooth, which will become weaker now that it has no viable nerve or blood supply.

Visually, Crowns Can Look Better

If you have a large cavity, the filling may not look very appealing. A crown will look much better, so it's an aesthetic choice as well as a way of providing the tooth with more support.
