You should expect your dentures to last for about 10 years if you take really good care of them and your gums. To do this there are some tips that you should make sure to follow.
Remove Your Dentures at Night
It's important to take your dentures out overnight so you don't put undue pressure on your gums when they need some rest. Doing so will eventually cause you to have sore spots, which will prevent your dentures from fitting properly.
Use Caution When Handling Your Dentures
Dentures are very tough in that they can withstand the pressure you put on them while chewing food. They're also very fragile, so when you drop them on a hard surface they'll break. Once this happens, they probably won't fit in your mouth right. This is why it's important to always handle your dentures over water or a soft towel and store them in water when you're not wearing them. If you don't keep them wet, they'll begin to slightly warp, which will make them feel uncomfortable.
Don't Use Hot Water on Your Dentures
Hot water can change your dentures' shape, especially when it comes to their base. When you clean your dentures daily you won't need to use hot water.
Clean Your Dentures Daily
Your dentures are no different than your teeth in that they must be cleaned. While you can't get cavities, you can get stains. Your dentures can also start smelling bad if food particles are left in them for a long duration.
To clean your dentures, use a toothpaste or cleanser specifically made for your dentures. Never use regular toothpaste because it'll be too abrasive for your dentures. If you have any questions about these tips, make sure you give our office a call to get all the answers you need.
