What Exactly Is a Denture Sore?

Posted on 6/15/2018 by Dr. Shiotsu
Denture Sores Goichi Shiotsu, DDS WA 98040-2985Denture sores (a.k.a. denture-related stomatitis) is a common condition that occurs when an oral mucous membrane appears under your denture.

About 90% of the time this involves candida (yeast), which is typically harmless, but, in this case, can cause problems.

Causes of Denture Sores

One of the major causes of denture sores is failure to remove and clean your dentures on a regular basis. However, diabetes, a high carbohydrate diet, dry mouth, and HIV are other underlying factors. It's also important to understand that wearing dentures also alters your mouth's microbiota.

This can cause a form of bacteria or yeast to develop in your mouth. Eventually, your mouth's environment is more acidic and less exposed to things like saliva. All of this adds to the issues here.

Signs and Symptoms of Denture Sores

This is a painless, asymptomatic condition that usually occurs under your upper denture - rarely under a lower denture. It will leave your gums swollen to the point they may even bleed. Sometimes you can feel this happening before these sores form since you'll know when your dentures don't fit well.

When this happens, they'll place pressure on your gums and jawbone, which can lead to the underlying irritation that often results in denture sores. In either case, inflammation and trauma resulting from this irritation can become a real problem when you wear dentures.

Treating Denture Sores

The most important part of treating denture sores is improving your overall denture hygiene. Cleaning and disinfecting your dentures overnight in antiseptic is important. You'll also need to make an appointment with our office to have the mucosal infection treated.

This typically involves using a topical antifungal medication and an antimicrobial mouthwash. We'll also make sure you don't have any other underlying issues so contact us today to get the healthy set of dentures you deserve.
