When You Shouldn't Use a Partial Denture

Partial dentures can be a great way to fill in the gaps of missing teeth. They give you a full-looking smile, and they give you the ability to chew most foods like you would have with your original teeth. However, they are only ideal in certain cases.

If all of your teeth are healthy other than the gaps where your original teeth are now missing, then you are likely a good candidate for partial dentures. However, if you need some work done on your teeth, then you may want to wait on getting them.

What Restrictions Can Come with Getting Partial Dentures

One of the biggest restrictions that comes with partial dentures is having teeth healthy enough to hold them in place before you get one. Partial dentures can be stuck in place, or they can also be removable.

Either way, they must sit up against the teeth adjacent to the gap to hold them in place. This requires those teeth be healthy enough to bear that extra pressure.

Another restriction that often comes with partial dentures is that the missing teeth must not be at the very back of your arch. Again, the partials need to rest against other teeth to hold them in place. By having only one set of teeth to use to support the partial, the partial is more at risk of slipping and shifting around, which can hurt or leave you with denture sores.

If you want to find out if your mouth would be a good candidate for partial dentures, then ask your prosthodontist. They can look at your mouth and the gaps that it currently has, and tell you their specific recommendations to correct the problem and give you back the healthy, functional smile you were hoping for.
