They are essential for biting and chewing, they control airflow for speech, and they even help to provide necessary stimulation for the health and integrity of your jaw. Is Your Smile Marred by Small Flaws?

Even the smallest flaws in your teeth can significantly impact the quality of your smile and cause your confidence to plummet. Common minor issues that can affect your teeth include
•  Tiny chips or cracks that only affect the outermost layer of your teeth.
•  Minor alignment issues, such as small gaps between the teeth or slightly overlapping.
•  Small or misshapen teeth.
•  Discoloration that has not responded to whitening.

This patient's bite didn't line up, and there was discoloration.
In this case, the solution were porcelain veneers.

What are Veneers?

Veneers are a cosmetic treatment designed to correct the appearance of your teeth, enhancing your smile. They are thin, shell-like structures that are made to bond to the front surfaces of damaged teeth, effectively covering over the flaws and completely transforming the appearance of your smile.

The Benefits of Using Porcelain

Veneers are typically made from either composite resin or porcelain. Our veneers are made from porcelain. While both materials are tooth-colored, porcelain looks much more natural. The material can be stained and finished to perfectly match the color of your surrounding teeth. It also reflects light just like enamel. Other benefits of porcelain include
•  Strength. Porcelain is much stronger than composite resin, and it can stand up to better to daily use. Where composite resin typically only lasts 7 to 10 years, porcelain can last 15 years or longer.
•  Stain-resistance. Composite resin is porous, and it can stain just like your natural tooth enamel. However, unlike your natural tooth enamel, the composite resin cannot be whitened. Instead, if you want to whiten your smile, you would need to have your veneers replaced. Porcelain, on the other hand, is much more stain resistant. In fact, it is even more stain resistant than your natural enamel.
•  Biocompatibility. Porcelain is biocompatible, meaning that it will not irritate your gum tissues.

Getting Porcelain Veneers

To place porcelain veneers, we first need to prepare the teeth that are going to be treated. This process, done under a local anesthetic, involves removing a small portion of the enamel from the front surfaces of your teeth. This is done to ensure that your veneers fit naturally in with the rest of your smile. Once the teeth have been prepared, we take an impression of your mouth. The impression is then used to design and create your customized porcelain veneers. Once the veneers have been completed, we check them for fit and secure them into place with specialized dental cement.

With porcelain veneers, we can restore, and even enhance, the appearance of your teeth, the quality of your smile, and your self-confidence. For more information, and to find out if porcelain veneers are right for you, call Goichi Shiotsu, DDS at (206) 232-3600 today.
