Dental Implants
Mercer Island, WA

Dental Implants overview to educate Mercer Island patients about Dental Implants at Goichi Shiotsu, DDSHaving a missing tooth as an adult can be devastating. In the past, the only option was to get dentures, but this option came with a significant drawback, bone loss. Here at Goichi Shiotsu, DDS, we offer our patients a better option, dental implants.

The Problem with Bone Loss

The roots of your teeth are set in your jawbone, and when your gums are healthy, they hold your teeth snugly in place. This prevents the teeth from becoming loose, which could eventually lead to tooth loss.

The most common reason for tooth loss is periodontal disease, an advanced form of gum disease. People will stop getting their regular dental cleanings for a variety of reasons. In many cases, seniors don't have access to dental insurance and can't afford professional dental care.

One of the most significant problems with missing teeth is bone loss. This has become a crisis for people over 50-years-old in the U.S. and according to a report in 2006, more than 30-million Americans are missing all their upper or lower teeth. The action of eating and chewing is meant to keep the strength of your teeth, and when there is a missing tooth, the bone won't get stimulated.

Unfortunately, things like dentures won't help with bone stimulation in the absence of teeth.

What are Dental Implants?

The dental implants post is attached to the bone structure of the mouth by Mercer Island Dentist, Goichi Shiotsu, DDS.Dental implants have become increasingly popular due to aggressive TV campaigns, and patients ask us more about this surgery. Since many of them are conscious about their smile and worried about dentures that need constant adjustment, they want to know if dental implants are a good option for them.

Dental implant surgery consists of several steps:
After the post has been placed, the crown is attached to the dental implant by Mercer Island Dentist, Goichi Shiotsu, DDS.
•  Preparing the Jawbone –
•  sometimes dental implants require another surgery called bone augmentation. This can happen when there is not enough bone to support an implant, or the jawbone is too thin. Once the bone regenerates, you are ready for your new implants.
•  Implanting –
•  our surgeon implants the titanium rod or stake in the jawbone. The recovery from the dental implant surgery will depend on each patient but generally takes between three to six months.
•  Adding the connector –
•  once the gums have healed and the bone has regenerated, we will add a connector that will support the crown. New technology considers that teeth are translucent and most of the times the connector is made of zirconium to achieve the desired effect.
•  Placing the crown –
•  finally, we add the crown which will look and function like your natural teeth.

Some of the newest technology allows this process to be completed in one visit, especially when we are replacing a full set of lower or upper teeth. We will build the implants along with the connector and crown and implant them during the surgery.

Dental implant surgery enjoys a high rate of success when done by our professionals, but one of the problems is that it's usually not covered by insurance companies and it can be quite costly. However, the procedure can improve your quality of life and bring you renewed confidence.

If you have missing teeth and are considering dental implants, please visit Goichi Shiotsu, DDS or call us at (206) 232-3600 today.
