How to Help Your Mouth Adjust to Eating with Dentures

Posted on 6/25/2018 by Dr. Shiotsu
Dentures Goichi Shiotsu, DDS WA 98040Dentures can readily help you address your aesthetic issues and other problems brought about by your missing teeth. Unfortunately, it takes some time before you can fully get used to it and before your cheek muscles and tongue learn how to keep them in place.

One of the major challenges of wearing dentures initially is eating. To help you adjust, make sure to only eat soft foods at the beginning. Practice chewing slowly using both sides of your mouth so that your dentures will stay firmly attached and avoid tipping.

Eventually, you can cut your food into small pieces, but make sure to continue chewing using both sides of your mouth.

Practical Tips to Help You Get Used to Dentures

Wearing dentures is uncomfortable especially for new wearers. It takes some time to get used to, but you have to be patient and realistic with your progress. Do not expect to make full use of your dentures, whether eating or speaking, at the onset no matter how strong your will is.

Note that it is not a matter of will but something that you have to go through and get used to over time. Again, patience is key.

You should also practice speaking and eating, no matter how difficult it is at first. Take the cue from professional speech therapists and try singing your favorite songs aloud. Singing is apparently an effective strategy in speech training. Try to exercise your cheek muscles as well as it can help you to chew and swallow your food better.

While these strategies can be simple, they have a positive impact on your denture journey collectively. It is important to note, however, that you do not have to go through this journey alone. If you are truly having a hard time adjusting, you can always visit us, so we can assist you in finding the best solution for your dental problems.
